pattern recognition

first-attempt at fried chicken turned into, i think, something i will make for the rest of my life. soooooooooo good.

soak in buttermilk for, like, forever. (or overnight). with some salt and pepper. get your buttermilk and chicken from field gate organics in the market and it will be delicious.

dump some flour and more salt and pepper (and whatever else you want) into a paper bag and put a couple pieces of chicken in at a time and shake it around.

fry in bubbling SHORTENING

bake for a bit afterwards. forget about it in the oven cuz you're watching bored to death but it's still good.

so effing good. it was soooo moist on the inside. def will make it again/experiment with seasonings..
(ohhh...had with mashed potatoes with cream, butter and boursin 'herb soft cheese'....mmmmmmmmmmmmm)..

pretty lovely day of browsing around and little picnicky foods on the porch! now it's getting late and im not sure i'll be able to motivate myself to go out.....might make lemonade (and add vodka??) and stay in and read.......YOU CARE ABOUT THIS.

may 24 at the beach global warming wooooooo bye.

hay

i dont think i know what the metal ring is really for.

i think i used it for the wrong kind-a-thing...JUST TOO EAGER YOU KNOW?!

anyway, i put ham (smoked/cured by my dad) on the bottom...then old white cheddar slices, then some sauteed zucchini and cremini mushrooms and fresh chives. poached egg..grated parmesan and more fresh chives. (from my mom's garden awwww).

i finally planted some herbs beside my porch....COULDNT BE MORE STOKED. (parsley, german thyme, rosemary and oregano...will only bore you with a picture of one of them).

byes! tea/vodka time!

woops

forgot to blaaawg.

really did make the venison with roasted purple potatoes and garlic and whatever else i said i was going to do. garnished with some of the amazing bacon and rosemary. didnt uhhhh want to go too overboard on the green you know. wow that plate looks sad. (oh oh! also ORGANICSHUTUP cremini mushrooms FROM THE MARKET HOW ANNOYING. and pan juices).

today i 'made a picnic' for myself...hardly. i had carrots and cherry tomatoes and hummus and a piece of venison jerky (yes, thanks dad) and water in my new thermos that i love so much.

i saw baby geese and a cardinal and mushrooms and a pretty flowery bush-not necessarily in that order.

got some vodka and lemons and perrier and plan to make some iced (rooibos) tea to mix with it all. PARTYTIMEWOO LONGWEEKEND YAH.

also picked up a 'metal food ring' at kiss the cook..he told me what they're actually called but i maybe forget now...i thought he said 'roesti ring'...as in the potato thing...hmmm. anyway, look forward to douchier food, piled high and neatly!

i dont always know what you're saying

FIRST OFF,
i've been inhaling the best coffee i've had in a while the last few days...finally got a new french press/freshly ground dark italian beans. prior to this, it was hazelnut flavour from the supermarket blah bleh blech coffee...which i often wouldnt bother with in the mornings and would simply indulge in the exquisite complimentary costco coffee we have at work. (WHICH I APPRECIATE). WOW, BORING.

my dad makes the best bacon in the world. he smokes it for about 1000 days in his magical backyard koi fish fawn doe deer fairy world.

when i remembered i still had a package in the freezer, i made a simple egg thing. pumpernickel bread, a poached egg or two, BACON, asparagus and old white cheddar. those are some pretty good things. i was blabbing on and on while eating it that it's really about the quality of the ingredients and not how 'fancy' or whatevs the dish is. i would never make this with normal bacon from the store, or crappy cheese, bread, etc...

this is definitely my favourite way to cook...simple, with the best product. no duh, right?

tonight im making a venison roast (wrapped in bacon........i have to use it up...cant just let it sit in the fridge! uhhhhhhh)...with cremini mushrooms and purple potatoes. i love purple potatoes.

byes!

ps holy shit: i just listened to some cray cray baby-talk to leo for about 5 minutes?!?! 'poor kitty, i bet kitty's hungry oh yeah baby kitty' BARF. he's SITTING ON MY PORCH WITH A COLLAR ON AND IS FAT AND HAPPY. GET OFF MY PORCH.

k bye.

non poisonous risotto

hmmmmm risotto with shrimp, peas and broccoli and extra cheesy! and frozen halibut ON A BUN WITH CREAMY CUCUMBER DRESSING. i love this. oh well.
SURF AND SURF.

shrimp. when the great oil spill of 2010 came up at work, one of the first things mentioned was how i must buy up a ton of bags of frozen shrimp because it's likely we wont have the pleasure of it's company for at least A GENERATION. WHAT. anyway, that is my concern, not the entire ecosystem currently being destroyed. nope. currently dreaming of costco-sized bags of frozen shrimp.

soooo nice out today. we brainstormed in the park about a blog for leo. thoughts? i "met" another fan of his today. if i'm outside when he is, the majority of people stop and tell me how much they like him, how he's the neighbourhood mascot, how they used to have a black cat, what their grandma's uncle had for dinner, etcetcetc. a blog chronicling his life seems more efficient. plus, i prefer blogging to real life interaction. JK leo fans! keep stopping by! haha.

name ideas?
"where's leo?"
"life of leo"
"leo on kent"
these are all lame.
help.

saaaalad

i bought a mango with the intention of making a shrimp, mango, cucumber, ETC salad. of course, the mango had long since turned, but i was determined to keep my promise to...myself.

i marinated the shrimp in rice vinegar, a bit of soya (soy? what's the difference?) sauce, fresh grated ginger, garlic and the rind of an orange...making sure not to get down to the pith.

thinly sliced cucumber and radish, chunks of orange.

sauteed shrimp on top...green onion...sprinkle of red pepper flakes woooo.
(iphone photos bleh)

breaking news: shrimp, orange and green onion tastes good together.

now i want yo yo's (how do they not have a website...extra sketchy now guys!)...AND/OR this to open right now! I AM GOING TO BE NEIGHBOURS WITH A POUTINE PLACE.

food poisoning?

maybe because of this?

i had to make myself this today

i often make miso soup when im hungover, have a cold, etc so i figured it might be ok with a barfy stomach. (extra freshly grated ginger!).

i spent the most amazing couple of hours last night around 3am having diarrhea and vomitting and moaning and groaning and squirming around. i really dont want to blame any one thing i ingested the day prior, but im almost certain it was the mushroom risotto i had for lunch at garlics. as soon as i saw it i knew it wasnt great. i tried it hesitantly, and the first thing i noticed was that it was umm, COLD. aside from that, the texture was sonotlikerisotto. it was gluey sticky old hard rice...ish. not creamy and smooth. in short, it was lumpy and cold and tasted weird. it was apparent pretty much from the moment we sat down that something wasnt right in the restaurant that day...tons of crashes coming from the kitchen, visibly understaffed out on the floor, so when it was mentioned that my dish was not really acceptable, our waitress was quick to say she'd just omit it from the bill...without really apologizing or umm smiling..it was like she expected it.

the rest of the day i had a simple, fresh bean salad, and some eggs. im sure it was the questionable risotto that did this to me. i dont think i will be going back to garlic's for awhile. sigh.

i think im going to watch a dumb movie and get back into bed waaaaah.

risotto fetish forming

i've been through miso soup phases, poutine obsessions, and really overdid it with the poached eggs. i think it's time to admit my risotto fetish.

this one was a roasted veggie risotto. cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, garlic, mushrooms, and a ton of herbs. ok it was more like a 'clean out your crisper risotto'.

when the rice was finished cooking i added fresh parsley, freshly grated parmesan and a tablespoonish (more) of butter.

IT WAS DELICIOUS.
